About this series

"A PORTÉE DE REGARD(S)" is a series of 40 photographs exploring the subjectivity of our gaze.

The act of 'regard' refers to directing one's vision towards someone or something. However, even though what we see should be the same from one person to another, our interpretation of it is always unique. Art can be a way to convey a gaze in all its subjectivity and singularity.

A PORTÉE DE REGARD(S) is a project composed of three aspects (Reflection, Condensation, and Distortion) that aims to convey the idea that what we see is never truly what is, and transparency is opaque due to its subjectivity.

Just as a photographer does with their camera, our eyes and brains select from all the elements in view those that are seen clearly and present us with a complete image. If we train ourselves to become aware of the various filters within the reach of our gaze and enjoy observing the different possible alterations, we understand that our perception of reality is constantly renewed, multifaceted, and subjective.

Like a metaphor for life itself, there isn't a single reality but several ephemeral realities that continually compose and reshape themselves through the alterations of the glass in these windows. Just as our brains do with the invisible filters of our thoughts (knowledge, emotions, impressions, experiences, etc.).

Indeed, the photographs in this project all share transparency as a common element, and each of them involves the glass of a window. Although they may sometimes evoke collage, they are not manipulated: these images are simply the result of this transparency effect, without being the product of manipulation.

​

Whether through:

  • the combination of the subject seen through the window and what is reflected there (Reflection),

  • the creation of a distorted image through the irregularities and imperfections of the glass (Distortion),

  • or the opening to a new reality behind the filter created by the flow of water or condensation (Condensation), each of them offers a unique perspective on a new reality.

 

These windows are the apertures through which we observe the world, and the image within our reach is the one our gaze chooses to see.
